Support sex workers in Spain against homelessness

The Ministry of Equality of Spain might soon be directly responsible for the eviction and abandonment of sex workers, especially migrants and black, brown, indigenous women of colour.

Last October 2020, the Government of Spain approved for discussion in the Congress a law that, if approved, would put the most vulnerable sex workers at risk of becoming homeless due to the criminalisation of sex workers’ workplaces, which very often serve as a home for many sex workers.

This law, presented as the greatest achievement of the "most progressive government in the history of Spain", will push sex workers to the streets. Instead of "liberating" sex workers, this law will make sex workers more dependant on unethical third parties and promote precisely what it intends to combat in the first place. We believe sex workers must be consulted when a decision is taken regarding their own lives; however, the Government of Spain made no attempts as such.

The European Sex Workers’ Rights Alliance (ESWA) demands that:

• The articles that threaten sex workers’ residential security be repealed. 
• The government of Spain and especially the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, urgently meets with sex worker-led organisations in the State and meaningfully involves sex workers in the policy and decision-making processes.

El Ministerio de Igualdad de España será directamente responsable del desahucio y desamparo de las trabajadoras sexuales, sobre todo migrantes y racializadas.

El pasado mes de Octubre 2020, el Gobierno de España aprobó para su discusión en el Congreso una ley que, de aprobarse, pondría en riesgo de quedarse sin hogar a las trabajadoras sexuales más vulnerables al criminalizar nuestros lugares de trabajo, que en muchas ocasiones, es su vivienda habitual.

Dentro de una ley que intentará ser el gran logro del “Gobierno más progresista de la historia de España”, se pretende dejar en la calle a las trabajadoras sexuales, quienes no fueron consultadas en ningún momento del proceso de redacción de la Ley de Libertad Sexual. Esta Ley, en lugar de “liberar” a las trabajadoras sexuales, lo que hará será que tengan que depender de terceras personas sin ética, al verse imposibilitadas para alquilar una vivienda. De hecho esta ley justamente fomentará lo que pretende combatir.

• Exigimos que se deroguen los artículos que atentan contra nuestra seguridad jurídica y residential.
• Los grupos auto-organizados de trabajadoras sexuales del Estado Español hacemos especial hincapié en nuestra exigencia de diálogo con el Gobierno de España y en especial, con la Ministra de Igualdad, Irene Montero. Silenciar a un grupo de mujeres ya de por si vulnerado, va en contra de todo principio feminista.
